Nero d'Avola is the best-known Sicilian wine in the US, much of it made in a forward, friendly style that resembles Australian Shiraz. But Nero d'Avola can make much more substantial and serious reds, and these two examples from high altitude vineyards in the wild hinterland of Sicily are simply outstanding. The selection of Nero vines cultivated at Feudo Montoni has been well-known in Sicily for centuries, and the combination of altitude, these distinctive clones of Nero d'Avola, low yields and careful, non-intrusive winemaking result in some of Sicily's finest red wines. (And a white; Fabio Sireci makes an excellent and very distinctive Catarrato.)
